The one-way traffic system has now been implemented on Russell Hill.

To help accelerate the works, we are preparing to achieve approximately 200 metres per week where conditions allow. Progress has been impacted by unforeseen services, including the need to open-cut additional sections of main and replace extra lengths of main that were not identified in the original scope.

These additional works were necessary to ensure the integrity of the network and comply with required standards. We will continue to provide updates as the works progress.

Update: 17.12.2025

Delays have been experienced on Russell Hill due to low gas pressures, multiple-occupancy buildings, and the presence of additional gas mains that were not previously recorded. The site is currently being cleared in preparation for the Christmas shutdown. Works are scheduled to recommence on 2 January 2026, at which time the one-way road closure will be reinstated.

Update: 02.12.2025

Works on Russell Hill have been progressing well. A significant amount of preparation has been required before we are able to lay and connect the new gas main. Next week, we will begin our insertion works, which should allow the team to progress more quickly along the road. These works will continue into the New Year.
We have experienced issues with road users travelling the wrong way through the one-way system. Please can all drivers adhere to the traffic management in place to ensure the safety of our workforce, pedestrians, and other road users.

Update: 05.11.2025

Please be advised that works on Russell Hill are scheduled to commence on 10th November. During this period, Russell Hill will operate under a one-way system. Access will be via Russell Hill Road, with exit permitted onto Plough Lane only.
This project is compulsory and must be completed within a specified timeframe. We are aware that there are schools within the vicinity of the works, and they have been consulted accordingly.
To assist with traffic management, lorry movements will be restricted during peak school hours to help maintain the safe and efficient flow of traffic.
