SOE16093 – Minster Road, Sheerness (Minster Road / Banner Way)
PROJECT: SOE16093
Location: Minster Road, Sheerness
(Minster Road / Banner Way)
Update: 01.04.2026
Project Complete.
Update: 17.03.2026
All engineering works on Minster Road have now been completed. This concludes all works along this section of our annual programme.
Reinstatement works are currently taking place and we aim to have the road fully reopened by Friday 20th March.
Our team has now moved to Banner Way, where works will be carried out under three-way traffic lights for approximately two weeks. This is to complete a small section that could not be finished during the previous works. Once this section is completed, all works in Minster will be finished on behalf of WCB.
Our compound located on the verge at Fleetwood Close will remain in place until all works are fully completed, as it provides an ideal storage location for equipment and materials in the surrounding area.
We would like to thank residents and road users for their patience and cooperation while these works have been carried out.
Update: 24.02.2026
Our team has now set up a road closure at the junction of Minster Road and Barton Hill Drive. This closure will be in place for approximately three weeks to allow us to complete the final section of gas main replacement works in this area.
We have allocated two teams to this project to help ensure the works are completed as efficiently as possible.
Week One: The majority of excavations will be carried out.
Week Two: Open-cut trenching works will take place.
Week Three: Final connections and reinstatement will be completed.
We are aiming for the works to progress as planned; however, should there be any changes, updates will be provided on this website.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation while we complete these essential works.
Update: 19.11.2025
All works completed.
Update: 05.11.2025
Last week, we completed our planned works on Minster Road, including installation from Fleetwood Close to Sunnyside Avenue and all three connections into these side roads.
During this phase, our team encountered deeper-than-expected gas mains, which required larger excavations and resulted in slower progress than anticipated. Despite this challenge, the road closure was successfully removed on 02/11/2025, and the site was fully cleared shortly afterward.
We do still have a remaining 100-metre section to complete, along with a connection onto Barton Hill Drive. To reduce disruption for the community, we will return during a future school-holiday period for approximately two weeks to complete these final works. Further details will be provided once dates are confirmed.
In the meantime, we are finishing our final section in Petfield Close, which we expect to complete within one week, with reinstatement works to follow. Spoil was temporarily stored on Fleetwood Close for an additional week to assist with these final works.
We would like to thank residents and road users for their patience and cooperation throughout this project. With your support, we have successfully completed 99% of the works over the last 15 weeks, and we are now very close to completing this essential upgrade.
Update: 21.10.2025
We wanted to share an update on our ongoing gas works in the area. We’ve experienced some delays on this project due to the increased depth of the gas main, which has required larger pits and extra safety measures on several connections. Last week, we completed all final connections into Orchard Grove, Worcester Close, Glenwood Drive, and Whybournes Chase. During this work, we also discovered an unrecorded gas main, which meant replacing a section and reconnecting two additional services to the new main. Our current road closure has now moved to the junction of Barton Hill Drive, where it will remain until 2 November 2025. This timing was chosen to align with the school holidays, allowing us to complete the final section of gas main replacement.
This week, our team will insert 300m of new main, with abandonment work completed next week. We’re also coordinating with other utility companies, including UK Power Networks (UKPN), to carry out collaborative works and minimise future road closures.
From week commencing 3 November 2025, we’ll be removing our closure on Minster Road and moving into Petfield Close to complete the remaining section there. We’d like to thank everyone for your continued patience and understanding while we carry out these essential improvements.
Update: 08.10.2025
Unfortunately, the team couldn’t insert the section from Whybournes Chase to Harps Avenue as the main was found to be full of rust and not insertable. Normally this would have resulted in open cutting, however there was an old medium pressure main that wasn’t being used, so this week the team have inserted inside this and transferred the services across.
As of w.c 13th our closure location will move and we will have Sunnyside Avenue closed along with, Minster Road. This will mean that access will be able to go up Barton Hill drive however you will only be able to turn left towards the secondary school and for the other side of minster road you will need to follow our signed diversion. Buses will be on divert and will need to contact the bus company for their proposed diversion.
As of w.c 20th we will have Barton Hill drive closed for 2 weeks over the school half term, this will be to do the final works left on Minster Road in which will be cleared by 2nd November.
Update: 23.09.2025
Since the start of September, the team have been working on the section from The High Street to Whybournes Chase. This week the team are looking to complete from Whybornes Chase to Orchard Grove, then the following week from Orchard Grove to Glenwood Drive. These works are needing to be done in stages to prevent the closure of multiple side roads at the same time. Over 500m has already been replaced and the team are looking at doing the remaining sections in 100-200m pushes hopefully getting ahead of schedule.
Update: 09.09.2025
Our closure has now been removed from O/s the Oasis Academy and has now moved to the junction of the High Street. Our team are this week working down to the junction of Bellevue Road in which from Monday 15th of September Bellevue road will be closed. We will have a spotter on site to state that no access will be granted down here to prevent those trying to access the school causing a massive congestion. This section will hopefully be in place for a week and we will look to continue down Minster Road towards Barton Hill Drive over the next few weeks.
Update: 26.08.2025
Last week we had 3 teams on site to ensure all engineering works were completed before the school’s return, this enabled us to get these works done as of Tuesday 26th. The remainder of this week will see reinstatement taking place before on Saturday the closure being removed here and moved to Minster Road at the junction of High Street.
Works will then continue from September until the end of October working from the High Street to Barton hill Drive.
Update: 12.08.2025
Team one last week saw them insert 300m of new plastic gas main from Outside the school to the junction of Banner way.
This week they will look to take on a following 100m to finish of their specific section on Minster Road.
However, team two was doing open cut trenching works to insert a new bigger diameter main to increase local pressures on minster Road.
The open cut trench has been completed and the gas up phase and instal of pipe will be completed this week.
Our next phase of works at the start of September will see these closures removed and a new one implemented by the primary school on minster Road.
Update: 29.07.2025
Our closure is now in place on Minster Road and will remain in this section for the next 3 weeks minimum. This is to allow for one of our two teams on this job to complete the open cut trench they are currently working on.
This open cut trench will be a booster main to increase local pressures in the area.
Team two is currently working away from the school towards Banner way in which also in 3 weeks they look to have replaced.
At this moment the teams have just started and are looking positive with staying on schedule with these works as currently planned.
